Responsibilities

  • Administer and/or distribute medications to inmates in various locations, to include but not limited to Health Services Department, Special Housing Unit, Mental Health Unit, or other designated within the institution and/or satellite camp.
  • Medications to include but not limited to Oral, Topical, Nebulized, Meter Dose Inhaler, and insulin in a manner consistent with nationally recognized safe medical practices, to include accurate identification of patient, medication, dosage, time, and route.
  • Assists in maintaining Medication Administration Records (MARS) to document all medications administered via paper or electronic record.
  • Must report and record adverse medication reactions, to include seeking immediate medical assistance for inmates with severe adverse medication reactions.
  • Maintain complete documentation on medication refusals and incidents.
  • Assist in maintaining sanitation of the pill line administration areas, clinical areas and the Pharmacy areas while adhering to infection control policies and procedures as applicable.
  • Assist the staff pharmacist in entering Physician orders, preparation of medications for Pharmacist review, and preparation of medication administration records.
  • Assist the pharmacist in maintaining stock of up-to-date medications (checking for outdates per policy) in the main pharmacy, satellite camp, crash carts, emergency bags and Automated Dispensing Systems.
  • Assist the Pharmacist with maintaining stock of forms as needed and updating Pill Line/Restricted Medication cards for inmates as well as filing Medication Administration Records into the Medical Record.
  • Maintains accurate inventory of needles, syringes, and controlled substances used to replace sub-stock inventory.
  • Perform minor clerical duties; such as use of BOP electronic medical record, computer documentation and scheduling, scanning documents, filing, typing, call-outs, institutional memorandums, answering phones, scheduling patients and maintaining stock records

Qualifications

  • Education: Completion of a Medication Administration training course, a Certified Nursing Assistant or Medical Assistant program which included instruction on medication administration, Certified Pharmacy Technician, Vocational Nursing program, or an Emergency Medical Technician (basic EMT) training course.
  • Certification: Current BLS from the American Heart Association
  • Experience : Working in a correctional environment is preferred but not required.
